Having just arrived in Barcelona, ??Gamper found him playing in a kickabout game in which started playing as goalkeeper and ended up scoring five goals. Apart from playing football he played hockey, rugby and tennis. Because of business he had to return to his country early, leaving an impressive goals per game ratio. He fought in the First World War with the Tyneside Scottish Brigade and was awarded the Military Cross. He became a coach.
