From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, it was considered one of the best central defenses in Europe. In his ten years as a Barça player, he was a key part of the team. It was characterized by being a hard and forceful defense.

Despite being from Cádiz and not from Galicia, he adopted the name by which his father and grandfather were known.
